IUI Success Rate in Nepal: Get Insights

According to the CDC, roughly one in eight couples under 35 experience some form of fertility issues. This is a rather concerning case for couples worldwide, including in Nepal. The good news here is that we have many options to treat infertility issues. One such method is intrauterine insemination. However, some may wonder, "What is intrauterine insemination?" and "What are IUI success rates in Nepal?"

In this blog, we discuss IUI success rates in Nepal, the factors that affect IUI success rates and more. So, with this in mind, let's get started.

What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine Insemination, also known as IUI, is a form of assisted reproduction technology. It is often considered the first step in infertility treatment by a wide range of couples. Why? In this process, the sperm is directly injected into the uterus of the female patient. IUI is typically timed with the menstrual cycle of the female patient. That said, the specific timing varies depending on the patient's circumstances.

Who is IUI Ideal For?

IUI is a good fertility treatment for a wide range of couples. Some of the main types of couples and/ or candidates for whom IUI is ideal are as follows:

  • Couples facing unidentified infertility
  • Couples where the male is suffering from mild male factor infertility
  • For female patients suffering from cervical issues such as scarring or mucus hostility to sperm
  • For women who are not ovulating regularly
  • Women over the age of thirty-five
  • Female patients with problems such as vaginismus
  • Couples without after six to twelve months of unsuccessful attempts of conceiving through regular intercourse.

These are some of the key types of couples for whom intrauterine insemination (IUI) is ideal. Besides the types mentioned here, there can also be other types of couples for whom the IUI may be ideal. That said, the specifics vary based on individual circumstances.

What is The IUI Process?

Sperm and Egg Movement for Fertilization.

The IUI process is the process of inserting the sperm directly into the uterus of the female process. That said, the entire process can be divided into four key steps. These steps are as follows:

Ovarian Stimulation

In this ovarian stimulation phase, you start taking medications to start the egg development. This process starts around two to four days into the monthly cycle. You can take medication for around five to ten days during this process. Furthermore, you should also make multiple visits to the doctor's office to keep track of ovarian development.

Triggering Ovulation

During the cycle, the ovulation is triggered by another set of medications. This medicine is taken on the thirteenth day. Furthermore, the IUI is done on the day closest to the ovulation. After triggering the ovulation, the IUI is scheduled twelve to thirty-six hours after the ovulation predictors show positive results.

Sperm Preparation

This is the key step in the process of intrauterine insemination process. In this step, the sperm is washed and drawn into the catheter and vagina. Then, the cervix is cleaned. During this process, the physician also confirms if the sperm to be used is correct, and the catheter is slid through the cervix into the uterus. After the doctors deposit the sperm, they remove the catheter.

You should note that before IUI treatment takes place, the doctors prepare the sperms carefully and are examined for morphology.

Insemination

In this step of the IUI process, the doctor slides a catheter past the cervix into the uterus. They then inject the sperm into the uterine cavity. Once they inject the sperm, the catheter is removed.

This is a rather simple process that only lasts for a few minutes. Furthermore, it is a relatively painless procedure requiring no form of anesthesia. That said, although it is a relatively painless procedure, you may face some mild cramping near your uterus and stomach area.

What are IUI Success Rates?

The specific success rates for IUI vary depending on several factors. Therefore, getting the specific success rate of IUI is rather hard. At Hardik, the success rate of IUI is between 10% and 20%

What Are The Factors Affecting IUI Success Rates?
A pregnant woman holding a baby's shoe.

As mentioned, Nepal's IUI success rate varies depending on several factors. Some of these factors are as follows:

Maternity Age

Maternity age is one of the key factors that affect the success rates for IUI. The higher the maternal age, the lower the rate of success.

The average success rates based on the age of women are as follows:

  • Women in the early 30s: 20%
  • Women between 30-35: 15%
  • Women between 35-40: 10%
  • Women above 40: 5%

Sperm Quality

Another key factor that affects the success rate of intrauterine insemination is the quality of the sperm. If the sperm quality is high, the success rate of IUI is high as well. At the same time, if the quality of sperm is low, the success rate is low as well.

Fallopian Tube Conditions

Intrauterine insemination is often less effective when the fallopian tubes of the female patient are blocked or damaged. Since the IUI relies on the natural movement of sperm towards the egg, any obstruction can hinder the process of IUI.

Uterine Factors

The success rates for IUI also vary depending on the uterine abnormalities. If the female patient has any form of uterine abnormalities, it can impact the overall success rate of the IUI treatment process.

Underlying Health Condition

Another key factor that affects the overall success rates of IUI treatment is the health condition of the female. If the female has medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis, it can decrease the success rate of IUI treatment.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle is one of the often ignored factors that affect the success rate of intrauterine insemination. If you have an unhealthy lifestyle and indulge too much in junk foods, smoking, and excess alcohol consumption, then there can be adverse effects on intrauterine insemination.

These are just some factors that affect the overall success rates of IUI treatment in Nepal. Besides the ones we mentioned here, several other factors can depend on your circumstances.

Conclusion

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI for short, is a form of assisted reproductive treatment. The couples who choose this treatment can vary depending on the individual circumstances. Furthermore, although IUI treatment is often considered the first line of treatment, it does not have a 100% success rate. However, it does have around 10% to 20% success rates. Additionally, the success rate varies based on many factors as well.
